GCSE Results 2019

Twynham School celebrates with its students today following another year of strong GCSE results.

Jy Taylor, Headteacher, commented: “I’m absolutely delighted with our students’ GCSE results and we are proud to celebrate with them in all that they have achieved.”

A stunning 15 students gained the top grades for at least eight of their subjects. These included; Jack Brooke, Tom Hallam, Jodie Green, Jacob Holdsworth, Anneli Jewiss, Amber Lee, Emily McLellan, Thomas Morton, Joseph Perrin, Eleanor Pulley, Mia St. John, Vikki Stephenson-Shrubb and Harry White

Particular mention should go to Vikki Stephenson-Shrubb who gained the very top, grade 9, in 10 subjects. In addition to this Vikki also achieved an A* with Distinction in Further Maths a subject designed specifically to stretch and challenge the most able mathematicians and is the equivalent of a GCSE qualification. To put this achievement into perspective, in 2018 only 81 students nationally achieved 11 Grade 9s at GCSE.

School headline figures are all up on last year and in some cases significantly so. 49% of all students achieved a strong Grade 5 in both English and Maths with 74% achieving a Grade 4 or higher, which is the equivalent to the old Grade C. An incredible 87% of students achieved a Grade 4 in English. These are the highest results the school has achieved under the new reformed GCSEs.

Headteacher, Jy Taylor, is delighted. “We really are very proud of our students and these results are testament to their hard work over the last 5 years and more. Understandably, much focus is on the results in English and Maths and I am pleased that both subjects have improved on their strong results from last year. What is particularly pleasing however is the range of success of our students.

In an educational climate where certain subjects are being withdrawn from the curriculum in many schools, Twynham continues to enable all students to study at least 9 GCSEs, many to study 10 GCSEs and some study 11 GCSEs. 67 students studied Art and nearly 30% achieved a Grade 7 or above and the numbers are very similar in Drama; 37% of Dance students scored a Grade 7 or higher, and in Music a stunning 44% of students achieved a Grade 7+. Results in the humanities and languages are equally strong.

We are similarly proud of our students who have worked hard to achieve the 6 Grade 5s required for a place in our Sixth Form and to the many students who have achieved the crucial Grades 4 and 5 in their English, Maths and other subjects to enable them to continue their education at their chosen provider. We wish them every success in their next steps.”
