Twynham School recognised by Minister of State, Nick Gibb MP

I am delighted to let you know that I have recently received a letter from Nick Gibb MP which congratulates Twynham on being amongst the top 100 non-selective state school for the greatest sustained improvement for GCSE results between 2013 and 2015. This is a great achievement and a wonderful testament to everyone’s hard work. I have also received notification from Alps (Advanced Level Performance System) which recognises the Twynham Sixth Form for its sustained excellence over the past 3 years. This recognises the Twynham Sixth Form as being in the top 25% of Sixth Forms nationally for ‘adding value’ to our students. You will also be interested to know that we have undertaken an additional analysis of the ‘value added’ of our Sixth Form compared to other local Sixth Forms, whether schools or colleges. You will be delighted to know that we are the top performer when compared to the 30 most local Sixth Form providers. We actually gave up comparing when we got to 30 providers and this search stretched into Bournemouth, Poole, Hampshire, Wiltshire etc. This is all wonderful news and recognises just how well all our students do at GCSE and at A-Level. For Year 11 students due to join our Sixth Form this coming September, it should be especially encouraging to know that you will be joining the highest performing Sixth Form in a very wide area. For our students in the main school, including our own Year 11 students, this should also give you confidence that our teachers and support staff really do know how to help and prepare you for your GCSEs as you move through the school. Twynham Sixth Form is the best in the area - official!

With the publication of the most recent school and college performance tables, Twynham Sixth Form comes out on top. The tables show the progress students make from GCSE to their A-Level grades (known as the “value added”) and of the 30 most local providers (we stopped looking after 30), across a number of counties, Twynham Sixth Form comes out in 1st place. This is a great place to be, and our Executive Headteacher, Dr Terry Fish, said:  “This is a great testament to all the hard work of our students and the staff who teach them and support them. Everyone, including parents and the wider community, has every reason to be extremely proud of the achievements of our young people”. Director of Sixth Form David Cook said, “For over 18 years Twynham 6th Form has gradually developed into an outstanding provider of A-levels; it takes a long time to learn how to do things well. Our results and student feedback both confirm the outstanding opportunities and standards that our students achieve. People see that and want to be part of it”. Perhaps it is no surprise that the number of applications for Twynham Sixth Form is at an all-time high this year, with even more students than before applying to join for September 2016. Adverse Weather

At this time of year when there is the possibility of snow, I felt that it would be helpful to let all parents know how we would inform you if the school had to close due to bad weather. Can I also stress that if there are examinations due to take place then those examinations will still run, even if the school itself is closed. We will do everything possible to ensure that they are not disrupted and students will need to report to Reception to check the venue, which might have changed from the published timetable. In the very unlikely event that we will need to close the school, I will post a message here, on the main school website. The message will be posted by 7.00am stating that the school is closed due to snow or ice. I really do hope that we don't have to do this, and we will do everything possible to keep the school open. The feedback from parents and students, over a number of years, has been that was a simple and effective way of making sure that everyone knew what was happening and we will use this same system again this year. In addition, the Local Authority has a website showing which schools and other services such as roads, libraries, refuse collection and household recycling centres, day care centres etc. are closed and you will be able to check this here. Just in case the school website was down, then the above link will be the easiest way to check. Any message posted on the school website will also apply to the Sixth Form – there will not be a separate message posted on the Sixth Form website. We will also put a message on the answerphone. I sincerely hope that it will not be necessary to close at all, but it is best to be prepared and ready just in case. Dr Terry Fish Executive Headteacher

Wonderful Priory Carol Service - December 2015

I would like to thank everyone associated with the school for making the carol service last week such a success. It was a wonderful occasion and our students were nothing other than outstanding. The photo shows the Bel Canto choir singing one of their pieces, with Mrs Jane Wright leading. As always, it was magical. Students from all year groups performed and led the service and I am indebted to them and to our music department for the superb quality of the music and choirs. It was heart-warming to see so many of our local community supporting the carol service and I know that it was exceptionally well received. A huge thank you to Miss Catherine Shanley and Miss Laura Niblett for the way in which they are leading Music at Twynham together with Mr Kevin Cook (Assistant Headteacher and Head of Creative Arts) for his leadership, Mrs Jane Wright for her superb singing tuition and Mr Michael Franks for his technical support. Thank you also to Mr. Chris Chope for taking the time to be with us and to Canon Charles Stewart for his address. Lastly, thank you to the students themselves who were a delight and who excelled, making this such a high quality and fitting introduction to the Christmas period.
